Easily the most talked about form of exercise over the last five year, and gaining momentum, is interval training routines. There have been numerous videos released, tons of information put out on the web, and even several high quality studies that have shown that high intensity interval training workouts are more efficient than typical, one level only routines.

But there still seems to be a lot of confusion about them. Many people aren’t sure how to do them, hurt themselves when they try, and then tell all of their buddies that these interval workouts don’t work. So then we have a lot of people out there spreading bad information and keeping people from participating in a routine that, if done correctly, could be exactly what you need to push your body to the next level…and maybe get rid of that spare tire you’ve been struggling to lose. When done properly, they are very safe and extremely effective.

So how is high intensity interval training done correctly? The biggest problem I see is when some hotshot does a little bit of reading online, or sees someone doing interval workouts at the gym, then puts together his own routine. These are the guys we always see ending up tearing a bicep or a groin muscle, then telling everyone how dumb interval training is when everyone asks him what happened.

You will be a lot happier, and find a lot more success with a program of high intensity interval training workouts that have has been developed by a professional. Remember the studies I talked about? A professional trainer has most likely (hopefully) read this information and designed his or her program to the specifications that the studies found to be most effective. If you can afford it, paying a trainer to customize a plan specifically for you, your body and your goals, by all means go for it. Nothing beats customization. But for the rest of us, there are several high quality off-the-shelf programs that I know you’ll be happy with.

One I enjoy recommending is Craig Ballantyne’s Turbulence Training (read my review here). When you do his program as he instructs, you won’t have to worry about tearing a bicep or pulling a groin!
